Painful Sacrifices and Difficult Choices
Carlos is a 61-year-old security guard whose income places him in a difficult middle ground: he earns too much to qualify for Medicare or Medi-Cal, but not enough to afford stable housing. He is currently living out of his car and relies on a P.O. Box for correspondence.
Carlos was recently notified that his Covered CA health insurance premium will increase from $79 to $129 per month. He is undergoing cancer treatment and must maintain a PPO plan to ensure continued access to the specialized care he needs. Unfortunately, in addition to the premium increase, his co-payments, prescription drug costs, and other out-of-pocket expenses will also go up. These added costs place significant strain on an already limited budget.
Carlos’s experience reflects a growing challenge faced by many Young & Healthy clients. With the elimination of health insurance subsidies, individuals and families are struggling to maintain coverage while meeting basic living expenses. Many are forced to make painful sacrifices and difficult choices that jeopardize their health and financial stability. Young & Healthy remains committed to supporting our community as they navigate these challenges and work to maintain access to essential healthcare.
