December Story of the Month

No Tough Choices

Today’s families are faced with enormous challenges when it comes to balancing employment demands with the desire to tend to the health and well-being of their children. All too often caregivers must take unpaid leave to take their child to the doctor or dentist for the care they need. That is not a choice we want caregivers in our community to have to make.

When the parents of four children – all under the age of five – wanted to enroll their children in our USC Mobile Dental Clinic they were concerned that neither parent would be able to leave their job to accompany their children to all the various appointments that would be required. Fortunately, Young & Healthy staff were able to help! Every day for four days, we escorted the children from their TK and kindergarten classrooms to the clinic site, where we made sure that they were cared for and received all the treatments they needed.

Initially, the children were scared because it was their first time in a dental chair. The USC dental students quickly allayed their fears. They were so welcoming, calming, and friendly that by the second day quivering lips turned into big smiles. The children were excited to be there, and the parents were relieved that they hadn’t been forced to make that difficult choice between work and family. In partnership with the USC Ostrow School of Dentistry, Young & Healthy provided expert dental care and a positive introduction to the importance of oral hygiene. We are happy to report that what might otherwise have been tough family choices gave way to happy and healthy smiles!

At Young and Healthy we have found a simple solution to a complex problem.
